Career Learning Part 1/3: what do you know about it?

Career learning. Have you heard of it? Wondering if it’s something you should look into? Or is it just another buzzword?  Well, for starters, the concept of career learning could likely shift your perspective on the work that you do and, in turn, benefit your clients. So, yes, it is important to know about!

In this first post of our Career Learning series, let’s take a moment to think about the kinds of things you love hearing clients say. Here are a few examples:

Whether you call it an ‘aha’ moment or a breakthrough, these events mark a client’s learning as a result of the work you do together. Maybe it’s a specific activity you give them, or something you clarify, or a question you ask that makes things click. Whatever it is, it’s the right thing at the right time and it’s meaningful to them. These moments can be a great source of motivation that spark a client into action toward their career goal. They can also provide a client with lifelong career planning skills. And this, in essence, is career learning!

So, if we consider career development as a learning process, how can we, as practitioners, ensure that our clients are learning? Well, we’ll talk about this in our next post!
